The 2002 Hungarian Grand Prix would see Ralf finish in third while Juan Pablo was down the order in eleventh. Juan Pablo would make a mistake while battling Kimi Raikkonen seeing him go off the circuit. Not a great race for the WilliamsF1 team but even so a strong drive from Ralf.

Hungarian GP Review: Third for Ralf

The 2002 Hungarian Grand Prix would see Ralf Schumacher secure a podium position with third place. As for Juan Pablo his race was spoilt by an off track moment while battling with McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen. He would finish the race in eleventh position.

Ralf finishes third. The start of the Hungarian Grand Prix would see Barrichello leading Michael Schumacher, Ralf, Fisichella, Massa, Trulli, Montoya, Raikkonen, Button, Heidfeld, and Coulthard. Montoya had a made a poor start and found himself under a lot of pressure from Raikkonen, who made a superb start from eleventh on the grid.

Up front the Ferraris were pulling away, with Ralf 3.3 seconds behind Barrichello after only two laps. The Ferraris were pulling away by over a second per lap. Raikkonen would try to get past Montoya. For Juan Pablo his race was not going well as he was dropping back behind Button who was in sixth. His race start would see him make contact with Button.

Barrichello would open up a lead of 1.1 seconds ahead of Michael, while behind them there were no direct fights in the top six. Fisichella could not maintain Ralf's pace, but was quicker than Massa. Jenson Button, who had made a couple of superb overtaking moves in the first couple of corners and was now running in sixth, after starting from ninth on the grid. Ralf was now seven seconds behind his brother.

So after eight laps the order was Barrichello, Michael Schumacher, Ralf, Fisichella, Massa, Button, Montoya, Raikkonen, Trulli, Coulthard, Heidfeld, Villeneuve, Irvine, Sato, Salo, de la Rosa, McNish, Webber, Panis, and Davidson. Michael was 1.2 seconds behind Barrichello, with Montoya and Raikkonen were getting closer to Jenson Button.

Michael Schumacher would set a series of fastest laps, the best been a 1m:18.170. Ralf was dropping back further, now over 10 seconds behind Barrichello. Giancarlo Fisichella was eight seconds behind Ralf, with sixty four laps remaining. The top ten was Barrichello, Michael Schumacher, Ralf, Fisichella , Massa, Button, Montoya, Raikkonen, Trulli, and Coulthard.

Sauber's Felipe Massa was just three seconds behind Fisichella and seven seconds ahead of Button. team-mate Nick Heidfeld was back in eleventh position. Juan Pablo was in seventh position but was a huge twenty three seconds behind his team-mate. It appeared that Raikkonen could go faster than Montoya, but there was no way past the Colombian, who was not able to challenge Button.

Jacques Villeneuve's BAR would come to a halt at the end of the pit straight, with what looked like a gearbox or differential problem. Montoya would go off the track trying to defend his position against Raikkonen. Montoya and Raikkonen were going through a quick right hander side by side and Montoya could not stay on the line and went off. He would stop for a check in the pits returning in eighteenth. In the process Montoya would be lapped by the leading Ferrari's.

Juan Pablo MOntoyaWith Montoya gone Raikkonen would start to close in on Jenson Button. The leaders would all start to make their first pit stops. Jordan's Fisichella would stop for 8.3 seconds. Barrichello would set the fastest lap with 1m:17,1. Ralf was fifteen seconds behind Barrichello. Michael Schumacher would pit, stopping for 8.4 seconds. Jenson Button would spins off into the gravel ending his race. Next to stop was Barrichello, stopping for 9.0 seconds. Ralf's pit stop was for 7.6 seconds.

So the top ten was Barrichello, Michael Schumacher, Ralf, Raikkonen, Coulthard, Fisichella, Massa, Trulli, Panis, and Heidfeld. Both McLaren's would stop with Coulthard first, 8.0 seconds, and Raikkonen following, 9.1 seconds.

So after thirty five laps the order was Barrichello, Michael Schumacher, Ralf, Fisichella, Massa, Raikkonen, Coulthard, Trulli, Heidfeld, Sato, Montoya, Panis, Salo, de la Rosa, McNish, Webber, and Davidson. The Ferrari drivers were controlling the race.

Felipe Massa was driving a superb race, but now Raikkonen was closing in on the Brazilian, while Coulthard was closer to Raikkonen. Raikkonen and Coulthard were right behind Massa with thirty four laps left to run. Coulthard would go off the circuit when he lost the backend under braking and had to cut a chicane, which cost him approximately 3 seconds.

Michael Schumacher was only two seconds behind Barrichello, with the top ten been Barrichello, Michael Schumacher, Ralf, Fisichella, Massa, Raikkonen, Coulthard, Trulli, Heidfeld, and Sato. Montoya was eleventh, 20 seconds behind Sato. After his mistake Coulthard was closing in on the rear of team-mate Raikkonen.

Fisichella would come in for his second and final pit stop. Massa would also make his final stop, coming out just behind Fisichella. Both Ralf and brother Michael would stop, with Barrichello next coming out just a head of Michael. Michael was in a position where he could have made a move on Barrichello at the end of the pit straight but chose not to do so. Montoya would also make his second stop.

After putting in some quick laps Coulthard would pit, stopping for 8.2 seconds, and he would come out ahead of Fisichella and Massa. Raikkonen would stop, 7.5 seconds, and he return in fourth position. Meanwhile Minardi's Anthony Davidson would see his first race end when he would spin off into the gravel.

With fourteen laps remaining the order was Barrichello, Michael Schumacher, Ralf Schumacher, Raikkonen, Coulthard, Fisichella, Massa, Trulli, Heidfeld, Sato, Montoya, Panis, Salo, de la Rosa, McNish, and Webber. Michael Schumacher was to drop further back behind Barrichello, thus allowing Rubens to win his third race. Michael was about four seconds behind Barrichello as they went into the last ten laps. If it stayed like this, Ferrari would also secure the constructors championship.

With eight laps remaining Barrichello was 3.4 seconds ahead of Michael, with Ralf some twenty seconds further back. There was no pressure on either Ferrari driver as they cruised around to complete the race. But even so there would be a new fastest lap for Michael Schumacher, with a lap time of 1m:16.207.

With his victory Barrichello was to take over second position in the drivers championship. With his third Ralf was to have 40 points the same as Juan Pablo, where as Barrichello would have 43. With four laps remaining the order was Barrichello, Michael Schumacher, Ralf, Raikkonen, Coulthard, Fisichella, Massa, Trulli, Heidfeld, Sato, Montoya, Panis, Salo, de la Rosa, McNish, and Webber.

As they complete the final lap Rubens Barrichello would cross the finish line just a fraction ahead of Michael Schumacher, winning the Hungarian Grand prix. Ralf would complete the podium ahead Raikkonen, Coulthard and Fisichella. Felipe Massa was in seventh.
