Red Bull Racing’s Singapore Track Record

For the fans, the awe-inspiring sight of the 5km Marina Bay circuit, lit up by hundreds of floodlights, makes the Singapore track a real contender not only for best street circuit but also best circuit on the calendar.

Each of the 61 laps consists of 23 corners providing overtaking opportunities and making it a challenging couple of hours. And thankfully the organisers have realised calling the corners Turn 1, Turn 2, Turn 3, Turn 4… was looking a touch uninspired. So three (three!) of the corners now have names: Turn 1 is ‘Sheares’, in reference to the Benjamin Sheares Bridge which towers over the track at that point. The bridge – and by association the corner - takes its name from Singapore's second president, who led the development of the country from 1971 until his death in 1981. Turn 7 is ‘Memorial’, as it’s close to the monument which honours the civilians killed during the Second World War.

The triple-apex Turn 10 is now ‘Singapore Sling’, after the country’s famous cocktail. It was the height of the kerbs here that created problems last year, with several cars suffering damage. For this year’s race the corner will get a nip and tuck, but we’ll have to wait until Friday practice to see how the cars react to these changes.

It’s a night race, it’s a street circuit, it’s been home already to several ontrack controversial incidents and it’s the only place where the track goes under a grandstand.
