Fernando Alonso failed miserably to claim victory in his home race and then blasted his opponents for the the mistakes that he was entirely responsible for. As he should have, Alonso pushed right off the grid, knowing full well that he needed to be in front from the start to win. Unfortunately Fernando pushed to hard. He braked late into the first corner, pulling alongside Massa into the bend. This was far too optimistic and he made contact with Felipe.
The World Champion would then run off the track and into the gravel trap. This was in fact lucky as in this type of incident, the driver in Alonso's position usually flips over. This was essentially the end of the Spaniard's race challenge. He would then sulk up to the podium, obviously disappointed that he had failed in front of his home crowd. In the post-race interviews, Alonso immediately blamed Massa for the incident. First this is what Fernando had to say:
"I think what I mean is that in this type of incident 99 per cent of the time both cars will finish in the first corner as we saw in GP2. I think when you are fighting for the championship it is very risky to be as aggressive as this in the first corner, sometimes, and I only mean that. We were lucky today that both cars finished, one first and one third, and thanks to that the incident will become a little less important.
I nearly finished my race in the first corner, unfortunately, when I felt that I went into the corner a little in front of the other car. If you look at my car, at my side-pod and the rear side of the car, it is completely touched. I think that shows everybody who arrived first into the corner. I was more than half a car in front."
One thing Fernando Alonso points out is that it is too risky to become involved in an incident like this when you are fighting for the World Championship. For some reason, he apparently does not think this applies to himself. The next interesting point that Alonso made was that he was somewhat in front. Fernando was only slightly in front of Massa and that was only because he had pushed to hard into the first corner. There was no way that he would have taken the position, unless Felipe gifted it to him. Massa had the inside line and drove into the corner like a responsible racecar driver is supposed to. The driver with the inside line is considered to have the corner, as Felipe Massa himself pointed out:
"Usually I was inside, so I had the car inside, so I don't understand his point. It was just a normal race accident and as long as I am inside, close to the car going to the first corner, I will keep there. I will not move. So, if somebody was aggressive, it was Fernando, it was not me."
Massa last comment simply says it all. Alonso was over aggresive into the first corner and this could have resulted in serious harm coming to himself and/or Massa. Not to mention the fact that the Spaniard ran back on to the track in a very aggressive fashion. This could have taken out Hamilton, Raikkonen, Heidfeld, Kubica and even the entire field. An extremely dangerous possibility which nearly happened. It is clear that Fernando was at fault. However, he refuses to admit it and worse still, blames another driver for his dangerous driving and subsequent mistakes. It is quite pathetic really.
